Leafy animal craft for our darling ballerinas!

Kids Art and Craft

Did you know that one of the most famous zoos in the world has a website dedicated to kids? Sorry grownups – you’re not included.

San Diego Zoo in California offers a fun website, where you can view live webcams of zoo animals, do fun art and crafts, watch videos of animals, play online games and more.

Who doesn’t like animals? I know my children do and when they started playing with this website, they found so many exciting activities to do offline as well.

With Australia in lockdown, your backyard is your oyster. Get your darling ballerinas outside in the fresh air, collect some leaves and use their shapes to make animals!

And best of all, it’s free!!!

Collect leaves of all shapes, sizes and colours

what you will need:

  • Leaves of all different sizes, shapes and colours. Pick them up from the ground, or with your parent’s permission, carefully snip just a few off living plants and trees around your home.
  • A blank piece of paper
  • Glue
  • Paper towels
  • A big heavy book

instructions:

Start designing an animal shape with your leaves

1. Rinse the leaves in a sink and let them dry!

Lay out some of the leaves on a piece of paper and see what animal shapes they remind you of. Don’t forget to use your imagination! Move the leaves around and place them together and on top of one another to form animals. Perhaps some leaves can be feet and others eyes, feathers, or claws!

2. When you have decided where to place the leaves to create an animal, use glue on the backs of the leaves to carefully glue everything together and keep it in that shape. Then glue the whole animal shape to the paper. Set the paper aside somewhere safe and let the glue dry.

3. When the glue is dry, put a paper towel over the animal shape and then place the heavy, flat object on top. Leave it that way for a day or two, so the leaves will become nice and flat. Now you have your own leafy animal work of art that you can hang in your room!

Some exciting leafy animal craft designs for inspiration!
